In August, the two-storey house of Yayasan Cipta Mandiri (YCM) in Bogor felt busier than usual. There were many activities that month, and each one brought its own kind of excitement. But one event made the whole building hum with energy, and that was the dance competition.
To understand why it mattered so much, it helps to look back. YCM was founded in 2002 by Ibu Gesine and Mba Putu, who shared one simple vision. They began with a small place for only a few children. Today, with the support of many sponsors, around 100 students between the ages of 10 and 22 come to learn here. Most of them grow up with limited resources, yet they share a strong wish to learn and to do better than anyone expects.
YCM is not a traditional school. It is a rumah pembinaan, a house where young people build their confidence, general knowledge, and practical skills. From Monday to Friday, the students learn English, computers, sewing, and soft skills that help them grow into better versions of themselves. Saturday feels different, the house fills with music, drawing, aerobics, basketball, futsal, math, sewing, and dance. Among all these choices, many students took their dance class very seriously, and their effort showed. That kind of passion deserved more than a quiet corner. It deserved a stage.
The Participants
For the participants, the competition began long before the music started. It began in the small moments of practice, when a difficult step finally worked or when a shy student decided to try one more time. These were small steps that mattered, and slowly they connected like dots on a page.
On the day itself, the picture became clear. Standing in front of a crowd is not easy, especially for children who are not used to being seen. Their hearts must have been beating fast. Yet one by one, they walked forward and began to dance.
This was exactly what YCM hoped for. The competition was a chance to show their talent, of course. But it was also a lesson in how to feel confident in front of many people, how to stay calm while everyone is watching, and how to build a strong mind. These are skills that no textbook can fully teach. A stage teaches them in a few minutes, and the children carried that lesson with them long after the applause.

The Judges
Behind the table sat the judges, who watched every performance with care. They looked at the movements, the energy, and the courage of each dancer. But their role went beyond giving scores.
After the performances, the judges shared comments that were honest, kind, and very insightful. For young dancers, this kind of feedback is a gift. It showed them what they did well and how they could grow next time. A good judge does not only decide who wins. A good judge helps every child leave the stage a little wiser than before.
In this way, the competition became more than a contest. It became a classroom without walls, where every performance had something to teach.
The Guest Stars
The event was also lifted by its guest stars. Students from the aerobics class took the stage with big smiles and lots of energy, and the room came alive. Alumni of YCM joined them too, and their presence added a special warmth to the day.
For the younger students, seeing the alumni was more than entertainment. It showed them that the road does not end when the classroom door closes. YCM is a place where friendships and memories continue to grow, even after students have moved forward in life. For the alumni, coming back was a way to say thank you to the house that helped them grow. For the children, it was a quiet reminder that they belong to something bigger than one performance.
The Audience
Then there were the people in the audience, and they were entertained from beginning to end. They clapped, cheered, and smiled through every performance. Some were classmates, some were friends, and all of them made the room feel like one big family.
Something beautiful happened as the show went on. Several students were truly surprised. They had seen their friends in class every week, but they had never seen this side of them. Some of the participants danced so well that the audience could hardly believe it. It was a good reminder that everyone carries hidden talents, and sometimes we only discover them when someone gives us the space to shine.
At the end of the day, the winners were announced in three categories. There were winners for elementary school, for junior high school, and for the favorite participant. Each name brought a burst of cheers. Yet the feeling in the room was not really about winning or losing. Every child who stepped onto that stage had already won something important. They had faced their fear and moved forward anyway.
A Long Road, One Step at a Time
The dance competition at YCM is a small chapter in a much longer story. It is a story about children who come from modest backgrounds but refuse to let that define their future. It is also a story about a foundation that believes in them, and about sponsors, teachers, and friends who make this journey possible.
When children are given a stage, they show us what they are capable of. That is what happened in August, and it will keep happening for as long as there are people who believe in them.
So if you ever have the chance, come and see it for yourself. Join us at our next YCM activity, sit among the audience, and cheer for these young people. Your presence may seem like a small thing, but for a child standing under the lights, it can mean everything.
