International Volunteer Day at YCM

On a quiet morning after the celebration, the hall no longer feels crowded, but the energy is still there. The banners may have been taken down, and the chairs neatly stacked away, yet the meaning of the day remains alive. For those involved, International Volunteer Day on December 5th, 2025 was not just an event on a calendar. It was a moment to pause, reflect, and remember why volunteerism continues to matter.

The event was held with pride and gratitude, supported by the Australian Embassy, Indonesia – DFAT Post in Jakarta, and represented by the First Secretary for Scholarship and Alumni. For the organizing team, it was an honour to see so many people gathered in one space, sharing a common purpose. Although the story was shared a few days late, the memories and emotions stayed close to the heart. Some moments do not fade quickly. They stay, quietly connecting the dots between past efforts and future hopes.

Behind this celebration is a long road filled with learning, collaboration, and trust. Together with a long-term partner, Yayasan Cipta Mandiri, the event became a reminder of how powerful volunteer-driven initiatives can be. YCM has spent years supporting young people from many backgrounds. Some came with limited opportunities, others with uncertainty about their future. Through skills training, mentoring, and a safe learning environment, YCM helped them take small steps that truly matter.

The journey was not always easy. Many young people faced doubts, financial limits, or a lack of confidence. At times, progress felt slow. But volunteers stayed. They shared not only their time, but also their knowledge, patience, and belief in others. One volunteer once said, “We may not change everything at once, but we can change one story at a time.” That simple idea became a quiet strength behind the work.

The presence of the Australian Volunteers Program added another important layer to the journey. Represented by Karina K., the Country Program Manager for Indonesia, the collaboration between YCM and AVP showed what is possible when people and organisations walk together. Volunteers from different backgrounds came not to lead from above, but to learn alongside the community. This approach built trust and created space for real growth.

On the day of the event, students, volunteers, and alumni shared their stories. Some spoke about fear at the beginning, others about failure and second chances. There were moments of laughter and moments of silence. Each story carried resilience and purpose. Together, they showed that volunteerism is not only alive, but deeply needed. It continues to grow through human connection.

A special appreciation was given to Mbak Putu Ariany, Co-Founder of YCM, whose vision helped shape a nurturing space for young people. Her work reminds everyone that when something is created with heart, it leaves a lasting impact. The organisation did not only build programs. It built confidence, hope, and a sense of belonging.

As the day came to an end, one message stayed clear. Volunteerism is not about being perfect or having all the answers. It is about showing up, listening, and walking together through challenges. The celebration may have passed, but its meaning continues wherever volunteers choose to care.

In the end, this story is an invitation. An invitation to believe that small actions can grow into meaningful change, and that every step taken with empathy can help shape a better future for all.
